As a bit of a science nerd, I've always been interested in optics. Lasers, lenticular lensing, infra-red,
ultra-violet, etc.
I got my start many years ago with a science magazine crummy IR monocular. It was pretty low quality, but
piqued my interest and sent me searching for strong infra-red light sources.
Soon after I also found a laser pointer, back before they were common.
More recently I've also gotten into ultra-voilet lights and objects.
My yooperlite fluoresces strong orange in 365nm light, but produces a less intense magenta light in 395nm.
The mineral responsible is "sodalite", and Google suggests 365nm is the best light source for it.
A friend that has an even lower nm (just barely visible) UV light claims it's even stronger. I'll have to
see about getting something like that. It may be "UVc" (254nm) which is used for disinfecting but is a lot
more dangerous to skin and eyes.
I've also heard that uranium fluoresces in UV light, although neither 365 nor 395 nm show anything on my sample
of uranium ore from United Nuclear.
